Netcare 911 provides emergency services to patients in crisis and they are the recognised South African leader in emergency services.
Netcare 911 operates the largest private emergency medical services training centre in Africa.
There are three major levels or qualifications of emergency care practitioners at present in South Africa. All emergency care practitioners are registered with the HPCSA who is also the body that sets the requirements for the training institutions.
1st Qualification – Basic Life support (BAA)
This course is the entry level requirement for those who want to work in emergency medical services. The course is presented over a six week period. At the end of the course, students will be able to -
- administer oxygen and oral glucose
- be proficient in CPR and AED use
- be able to deliver a baby
- safely extricating a patient from a motor vehicle accident
Students are also trained in the management of medical conditions as well as in how to treat a trauma patient.
Their second qualification is Intermediate Life Support presented over 13 weeks and the third qualification is Advanced Life Support over a period of 10 months.

They provide an emergency care service primarily to the mining industry. All those in the mining industry are trained to the required competency by MRS in compliance with the Minerals Act and Regulations.
The South African Mines Rescue Service is accredited by the Health Professions Council of SA , enabling them to conduct courses on Basic Life Support, with emphasis to specific underground trauma.
Their Advanced Course is a three day course in advanced mines rescue policies and procedures in order that captains and selected senior brigadesmen are provided with the necessary expertise required in leading and supervising Rescue teams safely and efficiently.
They are also accredited by the Health Professions Council of SA which means they can conduct a course comprising modules on Basic Life Support, with emphasis to specific underground trauma. Annual competency based refresher training is required.
They have other courses such as: Borehole Training, Rope Rescue Technician as well as training in fires and explosions.
