Makana Meadery was  founded in 2000 with the aim  of placing a  honey based beverage, iQhilika on the world’s shelves.Honey is a vital ingredient in the making of iQhilika and to match this demand the company has developed an extensive beekeeping programme.

The company has also expanded its products and services to include beekeeping products and beekeeping training.

The Makana Meadery beekeeping training programme consists of two courses and if necessary a certain number of follow up visits to trainees at their apiaries.

Beekeeping Level One

A two and a half day course  or a two day weekend course teaches basic beekeeping literacy -

• know the types of bees in a beehive
• know the basic products of a hive
• how to perform simple hive manipulations
• how to remove a wild swarm
• how to hive a swarm
• how to extract honey and process honey

The trainee writes an examination to assess whether at the end of the course they have  learnt sufficient beekeeping skills to be a small scale beekeeper.

Beekeeping Level Two
In this course the beekeeper is shown how to manipulate a hive to increase bee populations, assess queen strength and laying efficiency, how to make honeycomb foundation, how to set up trap box lines, how to migrate bees and how to produce value added beekeeping products such as beeswax polish.

At the end of this course the beekeeper can expand their beehives to a larger scale operation.

Gletwyn Rubidge has more than 18 years of spearfishing and freediving experience and has also won four South African spearfishing records as well as representing SA as Springbok Spearfisherman in 2007  If ever you are in for expert training, it doesn’t get better than this.

Their freediving or snorkeling course is for novices and moderately experienced freedivers. The objective of the course are to -

• inform you what equipment is best needed for spearfishing
• to train you in techniques that make you efficient and to also advise on different techniques and strategies
• to advise on the best spots and times for optimum success
• to advise on potential dangers and how to minimize the risks
• to explain the relevant legislation and ethics involved
