Professional Field Guide training course | Ecotraining | Nelspruit

If you are interested in entering the field or simply want to expand your knowledge in the African bush then this course caters for you.

This course has a duration of 1 year and there after you could be qualified with:

-Field Guide FGASA Level 1 Theory (subject to 75% pass mark)
-Advanced Rifle Handling (Basic, Intermediate/back-up, Advanced/Lead)
-SASSETA Competency Certificate – Rifle (qualification – rifle handling only)
-EcoTraining Level 1 exam
-FGASA Trails Guide Back-up
-Wilderness medicine (Level 1 and 2)Basic First Aid
-Birding with Lawson’s Birding Academy
-Field Guide FGASA Level 1 Practical assessment (subject to passing the theory and being deemed competent on a practical assessment)
-Tracking qualification (Level 1, 2 or 3) (optional)
- FGASA Level 2 Theory – work book completed and exam written (75% pass mark)

Lodge experience (approx 6 months) – Ecotraining will assist all students in finding a lodge in Southern Africa as part of their one year training. At the lodge you may have to take on many different duties such as:

-Assist with meeting guest/s at meeting point/airport, carrying their luggage
-Food & Beverage duties
-Reception duties
-General Guiding Duties (can logged towards FGASA level 2 practical assessment)
-Maintenance
-Assisting in the bar, serving drinks, undertaking stock takes
-Housekeeping

Game rangers have a responsibility to ensure that our nature reserves and game are suitably managed.

To fully understand the job of a game ranger it is important to understand Ecosystem management which includes:
-Weather
-Geology
-Fire
-Grasses
-Water
-Plants

Our subjects include:
• Landscape model: ROZ plan, fire management; water provision and Elephant management.
• Buffalo breeding programme and Elephant contraception
• Daily subjects will include ecosystem management as a whole
• Rare Game Management: Limitations and management options, active adaptive management, game counts and census methods.
• Alien and Invasive plant management, bush encroachment, tree rehabilitation
• Black pot principle
• Global warming and its effects on South African wildlife.
• Wildlife and tourism management’s co-existence, population dynamics, challenges and commercialisation in private and public sectors.
• Area integrity management: Anti-poaching, equipment training, patrol methods, crime scene management, anti-poaching surveillance.
• Animals: Game distribution, sex ratios, age classes, game numbers and animal condition
• Environmental auditing, house-keeping and waste management

Our tasks include:
• There may be game capture activity if one becomes available during the course, not guaranteed.
• Observation, census and animal condition forms which contribute to the collection of data which can be passed on to the game reserve’s management for their own use and the learners get to contribute to the authentic operations.
• Visiting buffalo breeding programme
• Final presentation done by all students as individuals – last day
• Learners do waterhole count and sleep outs.
• A full day and night (with his team) with Anti-poaching specialist Jack Greef at Makuleke
• Patrol drives to do game distribution; sex ratios; age classes; game numbers and condition.
• Practical work would include alien and invasive plant control and waste cleanup.

This course has a duration of 2 weeks. You will spend your first week at Makuleke Camp and the second week at Karongwe Game Reserve.

Our wildlife photography course is presented by Specialist Lex Hes.

This course has a combination of 2 aspects (you could either do both or just one of your choice):

1) Bush course: This course is specifically designed to teach photographers about their subjects. If you have a better understanding and approach towards what you are taking photos of, your chances of better photos are definite.

2) Photography Workshop: There is a lot of thought process behind any good wildlife photograph and that is what you will learn in this course. You will also be able to use this info in the field under the guidance of an experienced photographer.
