There are three major levels or qualifications of emergency care practitioners at present in South Africa. All emergency care practitioners are registered with the HPCSA who is also the body that sets the requirements for the training institutions.
1st Qualification – Basic Life support (BAA)
This course is the entry level requirement for those who want to work in emergency medical services. The course is presented over a six week period. At the end of the course, students will be able to -
- administer oxygen and oral glucose
- be proficient in CPR and AED use
- be able to deliver a baby
- safely extricating a patient from a motor vehicle accident
Students are also trained in the management of medical conditions as well as in how to treat a trauma patient.
Their second qualification is Intermediate Life Support presented over 13 weeks and the third qualification is Advanced Life Support over a period of 10 months.
